“Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?” (John 6:67)
St. Peter replies:
“O Son of God, O Lord, my Savior,
Thou art the Lamb, the Bread Divine,
Thou dost sustain my soul forever,
In Bread and Wine, Thy love doth shine.
All praise and thanksgiving to Thee,
O blessed faith, reason’s tapestry concealing—
Yet Love compels my heart to charity!
Upon Thy words, my soul finds resting!
‘Lord Jesus, to whom shall we go?
Thou hast the words of Life Eternal!’ (John 6:68)
A sinner — I confess! Yet Thy love I know,
In Thy grace, I find peace supernal.
How could I, who oft strayed from Thee,
Dare approach Thy Boundless Majesty?
If Thou conceal the splendor of Thy Infinity,
Through Bread and Wine, Thy Face I see.
O Divine Sacrament! O Heav’nly Manna!
O Bread of Angels! O Sacred Banquet!
I await, O Jesus, the divine Feast of Cana!
By Thy offering, my soul is renewed.
Ah, the coldness of man, leaving Thee denied!
To Thee, my Jesus, I lift my praise and laud,
‘For I believe that Thou art the Christ,
The Son of the Living God, my Lord and my God!’”(John 6:69)
